WIDMER - Hugo Alfred Widmer.
Hugo passed away suddenly at the age of 86 years in Kelowna, BC early Sunday
morning, April 27, 2003. He was born on September 27, 1916 in Walsh Alberta.
Hugo married Betty Winter in 1959 and raised their four children, David,
Michael, Larry and Janice in Olds, Alberta. His wife Betty passed away on
November 20, 2001 leaving a big void in his life, one from which he would
never recover.
Hugo lived a long and colorful life. He left Southern Alberta in the dirty
thirties riding a freight train into Calgary and then to Olds where he
arrived with 50 cents in his pocket and no job prospects. He was fortunate
to be offered a job that paid room and board on a farm west of Olds. Olds
was to be his home for the next 65 years. Hugo went on to work for Harry
Winter east of Olds and then enlisted in the Army where he became part of
the Hamilton Tank Regiment and traveled overseas. He returned to the Winter
farm after the war ended and purchased some land of his own. His two
brothers, Herb and Albert, joined him to form Widmer Ranches. In the late
1950's, Hugo purchased the Massey Ferguson dealership in Olds and continued
to operate this dealership through a variety of partnerships until 1985. His
retirement did not last very long. Hugo helped to form Widmer Realty Ltd. in
1988 with his daughter Janice and son Larry and was active in the business
until shortly before his passing. He was known for his many friends, weather
predictions and collective memories of the Olds area. He will be remembered
forever by his family; children: David (Sue), Michael (Kelly), Larry
(Laura), Janice (Dane); grandchildren: Eric (Janice), Chad, Mike (Danielle),
Brian, Nick, Jeffrey, Tanis, Lisa, Amy, Brittany, Kevin, Braeden, Colton and
