Obituary
JOPP - Wilfrid 1915 - 2004
Wilfrid Jopp passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at the age of
89 years.
Wilfrid was born on February 16, 1915 in Moosomin, Saskatchewan to Victor
and Irene Jopp. He was the oldest of six children and completed his
schooling in Rocanville, Saskatchewan. In 1940 he married Margaret Nelson of
Bowden, Alberta, He joined the RCAF and served in the United Kingdom and
Canada. In 1941 their daughter Patricia was born, followed by their son
Ernie in 1944. A second daughter Sharon followed in 1952. After the war
Wilfrid started his own plumbing and gas fitting business in Olds, Alberta.
Later, he was to become a beekeeper and a writer, as well as working in the
oil patch in the Northern Territories and the Yukon. In his sixties he
enrolled in the University of Athabasca, studying literature, Canadian
history, and geology. Wilf was an active member of Branch 105 of the
Canadian Legion, holding various positions including president and Zone
Commander. He is well known for his many years of organizing the Remembrance
Day Services.
Wilf is survived by his large and loving family. They include his wife
Margaret; daughters Patricia Stirton (Lethbridge), Sharon Paskin (Calgary);
sisters Dolly Orbell (Edmonton), Marie Pastor (Oliver, BC), and Edytha
Johnston (Victoria), 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 1
great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by his brother Charlie Jopp;
sister Patricia Bing; son Ernie Jopp; and grandson Jamie Stirton. He will be
dearly missed by all that knew him.
The Jopp Family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the
compassion and care received from Dr. Crichton and all the staff at the Olds
Municipal Hospital and the staff from Home Care.
Memorial donations in Wilf's honor may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion
(5241 - 46 Street, Olds, AB, T4H 1H5) or a charity of your choice. A
gathering of family and friends will take place on Wednesday, July 28, 2004
from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Chapel. A memorial service
will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Olds, Alberta on Thursday, July
29, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Bob Bettson officiating. A private interment
will take place at the Olds Cemetery prior to the service. MOUNTAIN VIEW
