Turnbull
, Nora Bengta.
With deep sadness we announce that Nora passed away peacefully at the age of
94 year on April 25, 2003.
Nora was born on the farm of her mother’s sister at Nowlton, Alberta (near
Carstairs) on January 26, 1909. Later that same year, her parents moved by
wagon to farm at Acadia Valley, where Nora received her schooling. Nora went
one year to Olds Agricultural College and then to Calgary to Normal for
teacher training. In 1928, she got a teaching job at Craigmurray, near
Cereal. It was here that she taught her life-long friends, Lilian Conrad and
Ethel Moore. While there, she boarded at the Turnbulls and met her husband,
Bill. They were married in 1930 and together farmed at Cereal until 1931. At
the height of the Depression, they moved to Harmattan where Bill bought a
blacksmith business. Nora contributed to the family earnings by raising
chickens and turkeys and milking the family cow. In 1958, she went back
teaching and stayed in the classroom until her retirement in 1974. She
taught at Harmattan for many years and then finished her career at Olds
Elementary teaching Grade One. It was here that she met her very special
friends, Audrey Durand and Ivy Weiss.
Nora and Bill raised three sons and one daughter. In typical fashion of
mothers, Nora often protected her boys from the wrath of their father by
covering up their many misadventures so that their Dad would never know what
had gone on.
Nora and Bill became very seasoned travellers through the years. Their
annual trips took them to the Maritimes, Alaska, California, Scotland,
England, Denmark, Germany, France and other European countries. They met
many new and close friends travelling together on these tours.
Long winters were spent stitching her beautiful pictures and crocheting
doilies. Nora loved to bake and a special family treat were cream puffs and
banana doughnuts. Summers were spent in the garden and her flower beds and
window boxes were showcases for all to see.
After the passing of her husband, of sixty-two years, Nora continued to
live on the farm with her son, Robert. In October, 2001, Nora moved into
Sunrise Village, where she was cared for very well in her own comfortable
suite.
Nora leaves to mourn, her son, David (Kathy) and family Greg, Deanne and
Joanne Lehocky (Roman), her son Leonard (Marilyn) and family Bev Hohenwarter
(Joe), Roberta Hammer (Mark), Dave (Jan) and Gary (Jody), her son Robert and
her daughter Wilma Ratcliff (Cliff) and family Don (Kathy), Bill (Barbora)
and Sheryl. There are fourteen great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Agnes
Cunningham and Enid Turnbull, and several cousins, nephews and nieces.
Nora was predeceased by her husband, Bill, her mother, Clara Eby, father,
Rasmus Nielsen, brother, John Nielsen, brother-in-law, Bob Turnbull and his
wife Dorothy and brother-in-law, Bob Cunningham.
The body has been cremated and burial will take place at Harmattan at a
later date, where she will join her husband.
A memorial service was held at the Olds United Church on Tuesday, April 29,
2003 with Rev. David Gilchrist officiating. Mountain view Funeral Chapels,
Olds entrusted with arrangements. (403)556-3223
