ANDERSON - Dr. H. T. (Herbert) Anderson, DVM, passed away peacefully in the
Olds Hospital, early May 12, 2005 after a lengthy illness.
Herb was born May 28, 1918 in Bluesky, Alberta, not far from Golden Meadow
where his parents, Theodore and Martha (nee Bjorn) homesteaded.
He took his early schooling in Glen Meadow and later graduated from Fairview
high school. In 1935 he graduated from the Vermillion School of Agriculture
and in 1941, graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College with a degree in
Veterinary Medicine.
In the fall of 1941, Herb went north to practice at Fairview, but after a
short time, was called to Winnipeg to report for active service by the
Government for meat inspection during the War years.
In 1943, Herb married Hilda Miller Standing of Inglewood, Ontario. In 1944,
they left Winnipeg and came to Alberta. They settled in Olds because Herb so
loved this area. For many years Dr. Anderson was the only Veterinarian
between Calgary and Red Deer, before pavement and four lane highways.
Herb is survived by Hilda, his loving wife of 62 years, his children, T.S.
(Ted) Anderson of Calgary and Lee Anderson (Rob McManus) of Calgary; as well
as his grandchildren, Kristin of Ottawa, David of Vancouver, Andria (Marc
Hoehn) of Calgary, Erin (Jon Olsen) of Calgary and Michael McManus (Julie),
of, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Ross and Robbie McManus of Calgary.
Next to his family, Herb's great love was for his ponies, horses and the
wilderness west of Sundre, along the Eastern slopes and in Banff National
Park where he served as the Government Veterinarian in the 1960s.
Dr. Anderson was a director of the Olds Agricultural Society during the
1980s and 90s. In those years, he worked with heavy horses. He was awarded a
life membership in January 1994.
Herb was active with the Kiwanis Club. He recently received recognition for
50 years service from the club in Olds.
The family extends sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the many supportive
friends, and to Dr. Wray and the very caring nursing staff of the Olds
Hospital who went out of their way to keep Herb as comfortable as possible
in those last days.
Funeral Services were held at the Olds United Church, Monday, May 16, 2005
at 2:00 PM with Rev. David Gilchrist officiating.
Memorial donations may be made directly to the Olds Hospital and Care
Centre.
As a tribute to Herbert Anderson, a tree will be planted in the Heartland
