Obituary
PEDERSON -Kenneth Paul Pederson of Olds passed away unexpectedly on October
28, 2004 at the age of 53 years.
Ken was born and raised in the community of Eagle Hill, west of Olds. After
graduation he worked in Calgary for three years at Cummins Diesel. The pull
of the farm was too strong, and Ken came home to work alongside his Dad. He
also worked for Gary Bracken on the wireline.
In 1978 he married Sharon Felker. They purchased some land from Ken's dad
and proceeded to farm fulltime, renting land every year. In 1996 Ken and
Sharon sold the farm but kept an acreage. Ken went to work for Lyle Travis
and Northwest Tank Lines and stayed there until his death. Ken, like a lot
of farmers, was proficient at many trades. His love was wood working and Ken
built many beautiful items for his family. Ken was blessed with four
children and they, along with Sharon were his main priority.
Kenneth is survived by wife Sharon, daughter Cassandra (Aaron) Stromsmoe,
son Daniel, daughters Renee and Jessica all of Olds.
He is also survived by his parents Paul and Muriel Pederson of Olds, sister
Marjorie (Bill) Frecka of Lethbridge, sister Sheryle (Don) Mueller of Olds,
niece Heather Mueller of Red Deer, nephews Curtis Mueller of Calgary and
Ryan Frecka of Lethbridge, mother-in-law Shirley Felker of Bowden,
sister-in-law Karen (Charles) Cox of Coleman, brother-in-law Allan (Tara)
Felker of Okotoks, nieces Melissa Felker of Bowden and Brittney Pomrenski of
Okotoks, nephews Jason Cox and Kalvin Cox of Coleman and Jared Felker of
Okotoks.
He was predeceased by his father-in-law Leonard Felker in 1993 and
brother-in-law Lorne Felker in 1998.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3, 2004
at Mountain View Funeral Chapel, 5226- 46 Street, Olds, with Reverend Cliff
Pedersen officiating. Interment will follow at the Eagle Hill Cemetery.

PALAMAR-Harry Palamar passed away at the Olds General Hospital on November 4, 2004at the age of 94 years. Harry was born in western Ukraine on January 15,
1910, the youngest of three brothers and one sister. He came to Canada in
1929 and made his way to Olds where he started working for the Canadian
Pacific Railroad (CPR), Calgary Division. Harry worked for CPR for 45 years
until he retired.
By 1939, Harry was working with the snowplow gang in the mountains between
Field, BC and Banff AB. In 1941, he met and married Tillie Temofychuk. In
the early 50s, he and his family moved to Madden, AB for one year and then
moved to Olds permanently in 1954. After retirement, he and his wife lived
quietly in Olds, growing his garden and raising cats until 1992 when they
both moved to Mount View Seniors Lodge in Olds.
Harry will be sadly missed by son Pete (Debbie) Palamar of Beaverlodge,
AB; daughter Frances (Marion) Szymanski of Bonnyville, AB; grandchildren
Jeffrey (Sabrina) Szymanski of Bonnyville, AB; and Niki (nee Szymanski)
(Andy Flynn) of Gold River, BC; Amber and Charmaine Leslie-Palamar of
Beaverlodge, AB; two great grandchildren Owen and Sean of Gold River, BC.
Harry was predeceased by his wife Tillie in 1997.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Harry's honor may be made to the
Olds General Hospital, Palliative Care or the Mount View Seniors Lodge,
Olds. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10,
2004 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Olds with Father Les Drewicki
officiating. Interment will follow at the Olds Cemetery. Funeral

SCHAFER-Mary Schafer of Medicine Hat passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2004, at theage of 96 years, beloved wife of the late Valentine Schafer. She leaves to
cherish her memory three children Lil (Rudolph) Mueller of Redcliff, Edna
(James) Rattray of Calgary and Will (Doreen) Reiling of Ladysmith, B.C.;
nineteen grandchildren, forty seven great grandchildren, seventeen great
great grandchildren and three great great great grandchildren; one brother
Fred (Audrey) Hager of Calgary; two sisters, Emily (Neil) Neufeld of Olds
and Inez Schimke of Trochu; one sister-in-law Gerry Hager of Calgary, eight
step-children and their families as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She
was predeceased by her parents Karl Hager in 1934 and her mother Elizabeth
in 1974; her 1st husband Adam Reiling in 1956, 2nd husband Chris Helm in
1984 and her husband Valentine Schafer in 1991; two daughters Tilley
Brettell and Shirley Ann Springer, a stepson Alvin Helm, her sisters Lizzie
(Rudy) Eberhardt, Bertha (Jack) Gruzie, Rosie (Art) Itterman and one brother
Leonard Hager. Mary was born in Ashley, North Dakota on November 8, 1907
and came to Canada with her parents settling on a homestead in the Kuest,
Saskatchewan area. She married Adam Reiling in 1937 and in 1943 they moved
from the farm to Medicine Hat. Adam passed away in 1956 and Mary lived in
Calgary, Olds and Wimborne before moving back to Medicine Hat in 1997. She
lived on her own until a couple of years ago. She loved cooking, crocheting
and gardening. Mary handed down many recipes to her children that are still
used today. Mary’s family would like to thank the Doctors and staff on 6W
at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and all the staff and Doctors at
Central Park Lodge. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may
do so at the Wimborne Community Hall, Wimborne, Alberta on Friday, November
12th from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the
Wimbourne Community Hall on Friday, November 12, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. with
Pastor Charlie Bowen officiating. Interment will follow in the Wimborne

SHIER - Walter Wesley Shier was born in Alsask, Saskatchewan on March 6,
1911 the eldest of eight children of Mabel and Wesley Shier. His family
farmed near Cereal, Alberta until 1936 when they moved to the Waterside
District near Olds, Alberta.
Walt enlisted in the army in 1940 in Calgary, Alberta and completed some
training in Camp Shilo before being shipped to England where he completed
the rest of his training. He was transferred to the anti-aircraft unit and
transported to Sicily, Italy. As Walt and his companions worked their way
north, Walt was wounded in action before reaching the city of Florence. He
spent two months in a hospital in Rome and was later transferred to a
hospital in London, England. In the spring of 1945 he returned to Calgary
and spent time in the Colonel Belcher Hospital.
On his release from the Colonel Blecher Hospital, he returned to Olds where
he worked on area farms. In 1949, he met and married Clara and together they
purchased the Olaf Olson farm in the Eagle Hill area where they raised their
family of six.
In November of 1957, the Shier family moved to Olds. Walt worked for CPR
until he began to work at the Olds College, which is where he remained for
nineteen years until his retirement.
Since his retirement Walt spent many hours in his work shop, helped all his
children with many construction projects, spent many an hour in his garden
and flower beds, and was known to have the best tomatoes in the
neighborhood. In the last few years, he fulfilled his time by creating bird
houses for every child, grandchild and friend.
Walt was predeceased by his mother Mabel, father Wesley, brother Cliff,
sister Irene Leonard, and his beloved son David.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Clara, his children (Ron
(Marion) Cowan, Laura (Dennis) Jersey, Pat (Toby) Racette, Sandy (Bob)
Bryant, Larry (Hiromi) Shier, his daughter-in-law Mary Ann Shier (Gordon),
17 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. He is also sadly missed by his
loving brothers and sisters Gordon (Irene) Shier, Marnie (Arnold) Davidson,
Dorothy Peterson, Doug Shier, Vera (Harold) Nobel, and his many loving
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for the late Walter Shier will be held on Wednesday,
November 17, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Olds Legion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Olds Legion and the Heart
and Stroke Foundation.
