Armstrong - God took his loving daughter, Ruth Maurine Armstrong (nee MacDougall) home on Friday, May 17, 2002 in the Foothills Hospital ICU Cardiac Care Unit, surrounded by her family at the age of 89 years. Beloved mother of Maurine Hassan and loving son-in-law Richard, Brian Armstrong and loving daughter-in-law Kathy Ashworth; cherished grandmother of Melanie Crowells (nee Hassan), Ryan and Nicole Hassan, Christopher and Melissa Hassan, Jennifer Ashworth and Jamie Ashworth; Great Nana to Mitchell Hassan (son of Ryan & Nicole); sister of Paul (Barbara) MacDougall of Montreal, Quebec.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Henry in 1967, parents Ellmore and Freedom MacDougall, brother Ellmore and wife Louise.

Ruth was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on January 13, 1913.

Her parents returned to West Gore, Nova Scotia where she grew up and taught French in elementary school. In 1939, she moved to Ottawa where she worked for the federal government as secretary for the R.C.M.P. retiring in 1967.

She went to Carlton University in 1978 taking Journalism. Writing was a long-time passion for Ruth and she won a silver medal at age 16 for her essay on the 50th Anniversary of Confederation. Actively involved in the Baptist Women’s Association, First Baptist Church, Ottawa she lived and practiced her faith.

In 1994, she relocated to Olds to live near her son, Brian. She was an active member of Olds First Baptist Church and took part in many activities.

Ruth was an avid bowler at Club 55+ at Spare Time Bowl in Olds. She participated in the Olds Writer’s Guild and Olds Art Club.

A celebration of life was held on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. in the Olds First Baptist Church with Pastor Brent Reilly and Pastor Norm Tauber officiating. Cremation.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Ruth’s honor may be made directly to the Foothills Hospital ICU Cardiac Care Unit, AC 136, Special Service Bldg. 1403, 29 St. N.W., Calgary, AB, T2N 2T9.
