FRIESEN - Walter Friesen was born on February 17, 1911 to Peter A. and Mary
Friesen in Sunnyslope, Alberta. The oldest of three children, he attended
Smouse Creek School and later the high school in Olds. Although he was
trained in metalwork at a technical school (later SAIT) in Calgary he
apprenticed as a butcher with his grandfather in Saskatchewan and eventually
operated a butcher shop in Torrington.
In his free time he enjoyed playing baseball with the Torrington Aces. In
the early part of WWII he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force where
he served as an airframe mechanic.
On August 4, 1944, Walter married Delma Leischner. In Delma's words "He was
a good husband, a sweet man. We were always on the same side of the fence."
Their marriage was blessed with two children, Bob and Sheila.
Walter began farming with his parents but soon after settled on his own
farm. Running a mixed farm was hard work but Walter loved his cattle and
"farmed with his heart".
He strongly encouraged his children to pursue their education and he himself
was an avid reader. Even in his later years when he was homebound with
failing health, he often read to his little granddaughter Diana. Walter grew
up in a Christian home and made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ as a
boy. That faith step was reinforced when he was a young father re-dedicating
himself to living out his faith before his children. Although he was not
very vocal about the faith, the proof was evident in his love for his family
as a genuine loyal friend and good listener. In the late 1960's, Walter and
his family began attending East Olds Baptist Church.
The on-set of Parkinson's disease and severe breathing difficulties began to
restrict Walter's physical activities. The last six years he was completely
housebound. He was lovingly cared for by Delma and Bob. Donna became his
private, always on call nurse and Walter expressed his appreciation with
many smiles.
His soul was finally released from his broken, worn-out body on December 10,
2003.
Walter was predeceased by his father Peter in 1955, brother Raymond in 1957
and mother Mary in 1968. He will be dearly missed by his wife Delma; son Bob
and Donna and their daughter Diana of Olds; daughter Sheila Troppmann and
Tom with their sons Kris and Matthew of Edmonton; sister Ruth Schneider of
Calgary; three nieces and one nephew.
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under
heaven: a time to be born and a time to die."
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 15, 2003 in the East Olds
Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Torrington Cemetery. Memorial
tributes in Walter's honor may be made directly to the Gideon's, Parkinson's
Society or the charity of choice. As a memorial tribute to Walter Friesen a
tree will be planted in the Heartland Tree Memorial Park (Olds). Olds
Funeral Home & Crematorium (Heartland Funeral Services Ltd.) entrusted with
arrangements. 507-8610.
