Bob was raised on a farm in the Hainstock district where he received his elementary schooling. He later graduated from the Olds High School. Bob was very active in the 4-H Dairy Calf Club where he enjoyed showing and judging dairy cattle. Bob, along with Keith Viney represented Alberta in the 4-H Club Championship Judging Competition at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair in 1953.

He had a large vegetable and flower garden and was always eager to share his harvest and give visitors a tour around his beautiful yard.
