June 2003

Berild -
Ole B.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ole B. Berild at the
Olds Hospital on June 8, 2003.
Ole was born on April 02,1912 in Calgary and was the oldest in John and
Maria Berild's family. He grew up on a homestead at Big Stone, south of
Youngstown. Being the oldest, Ole shouldered responsibility at an early age.
When the weather cooperated, they had good crops, and during the winter, he
would haul grain with horses and a sleigh, a two-day, round-trip of 50
miles.
While taking a Farm & Motor Mechanics course at Calgary Technical School
(SAIT), he was struck with acute appendicitis. There were life threatening
complications requiring a year's hospitalization.
In 1934, after successive years of drought, the family relocated to Tofield.
They left buildings and moved cattle by rail to land there. Later his
brothers Chris and John joined the war effort and were posted overseas. Ole
cherished his prairie roots and maintained many friendships to this day.
Moving from Tofield, he operated a gas/service station and homesteaded in
the Leslieville, Condor area. Later, he rented a farm in the Horseshoe Lake
District, (east of Innisfail) farming there for a number of years. Ole then
custom farmed in the Youngstown area before moving to Edmonton to work with
Adby's Construction.
He met Melba Schaefer while in the Horseshoe Lake District and on August 18,
1951 they were married. Their marriage was based on friendship, common
goals, family, respect, hard work, partnership, and love. Ole began a career
with the Alberta Wheat Pool, where he was posted to Cowley in 1952, Foremost
in 1956 and Olds in 1962. The new Alberta Wheat Pool elevator #2, in Olds
was a large, modern operation for the time. That elevator was demolished in
the summer of 2002, the last of the elevators in the town of Olds. Ole
respected the farmers and always enjoyed visiting with them.
Ole bought a farm in 1974, and upon retirement, it gave him the opportunity
to come back to his farming roots.
He was a good custodian of the earth. He respected honesty and admired
quality workmanship.
Ole was a member of United Church, Sons of Norway, Olds & District
Evergreens, was a staunch supporter of the Co-op, the former Alberta Wheat
Pool, UFA, Pioneer Acres at Irricana, and the Masonic Lodge.
Ole endured illnesses with strength and courage; he had a long life, met
responsibilities, and took the good with the bad. He was a gentleman,
loving, caring, kind, patient, with gentle ways, and a winning smile. Ole
was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with a heart of gold who
cherished family and friends. He always gave the best of himself.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Melba; son Cliff, (Pauline) and
daughter, Barb (Mel) Olsen and his granddaughters, Jacqueline and Jenna
Berild.
Ole was predeceased by his parents, John and Maria Berild, brother John,
sisters, Alfrida, and Berit.
A Memorial Service was held on June 12 at the Olds United Church with
Reverend Margaret Lange officiating.
Interment was at the Innisfail Cemetery. Memorial tributes in Ole's honour
may be made to the Olds Hospital & Care Centre, 3901 - 57 Ave. Olds, Ab.

Chapels were entrusted with the arrangements.

Stevenson - Pearl Arnetta Stevenson was born June 8, 1904 at her family's
home in Bruce County, Glammis, Ontario.
She was born to Stephen Alfred Stevenson and Lavina Thede. Her life with her
father was short, as he died from a horse accident on May 16, 1906. Pearl
was not yet two years old. Looking for a new start in life, Pearl and her
mother moved out west to Didsbury in the company of the Roeth family.
Pearl attended the Didsbury school. Later from the house where Pearl and her
mother lived, Lavina took an interest in a gentleman that would walk by. She
would run out and sweep the porch whether it needed it or not. His name was
Allan Spreeman.
On June 11, 1913, they were married and Pearl had a new stepfather. The
small family homesteaded at Chinook shortly after. Pearl then gained two
brothers, Elmer in 1915, and Walter in 1917. They had very hard times in the
30's and decided to move west to the Olds area in 1938.
Pearl then lost another parent. Her mother Lavina died on June 4, 1943.
Pearl then looked after her stepfather Allan for many years to come.
She worked at the Olds Hospital as a cook for many years. She also looked
after her many nieces and nephews over the years.
Pearl lived a very long life. She passed away June 1, 2003 from pneumonia
and heart failure - one week short of 99 years. She will be greatly missed
by her family and friends.
She was predeceased by her stepfather Allan in 1975 and brother Walter in
1996. She leaves to mourn her brother Elmer and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 8 at the Olds Hospital Chapel.
Interment at Didsbury Cemetery.
A special thank you to the Olds Hospital Long Term Care for the wonderful
care Pearl received over the years.
