JACKSON - Greta Phyllis Kershaw was born on June 25th, 1935 in Didsbury,
Alberta. Greta was the only child of Benjamin and Georgeinna Kershaw. Her
early years were spent attending school in the community of Westerdale with
many of her lifelong friends. Greta expressed many fond memories of the
local Christmas concerts, track meets and July 1st baseball tournaments. Of
course one of the most endearing ties to the Westerdale community was a
certain young gent named Bob Jackson.
Many of Greta's childhood experiences were to be instrumental in her future.
Her accomplishments included halter-breaking her Angus calf, cooking for
threshing crews and driving the team pulling the stacker. All these served
her well for her role in farming. During her youth, in her spare time she
enjoyed embroidery and cooking. Another childhood pastime included learning
the basics of piano.
Following completion of Grade 9, Mom attended Nursing Aide training in
Calgary, graduating at the top of her class in 1953. Many people of
south-central Alberta met her while she cared for them or their loved ones
at Children's Hospital in Calgary, and at the general hospitals in Hanna,
Innisfail, and Olds.
The transition from working girl to farm wife occurred in 1957. Greta and
Bob were engaged on her birthday in 1955 but a serious auto accident
postponed their wedding from 1956 until 1957. In order to extend the
celebrations of Greta's and Bob's birthdays, June 25th and 26th, the
marriage followed on the 27th. Annually, late June was a season of much
celebration and cake.
For the next 19 years, Mom was a full-time farm wife, cook, maid, gardener,
taxi driver, social convenor, tooth fairy.... The autumn of 1975 rekindled
her strong nurturing skills and she returned to the Olds General Hospital as
a licensed practical nurse. This she enjoyed until 1992, when she retired to
be a full-time grandma to Cam, Meg and Chris and commence her long battle
with breast cancer.
The last years of Mom's life were filled with tribulation. She suffered in
many ways and much more than any person should have to. But even so, from
time to time, we would see glimpses of her true character. A joke, laugh or
even a smile let us know she was still there.
Mom passed away peacefully Friday, October 24 at the age of 68.
Greta is survived by her husband of 46 years, Bob Jackson: son Darwin and
wife Susan: daughter Karen and husband Darcy: and their families comprised
of Cam, Megan, and Chris Grudeski: Aaron and Benjamin Jackson. Extended
family members sharing the loss are Art and Elsie Jackson, Don and Barbara
Krebs, Roger and Rose-Marie Jackson, two nieces, six nephews and their
children.
On behalf of Greta's immediate family, we would like to thank all who
continued to visit and support Mom during the times that depression and
cancer exacted their toll. We all missed the congenial, loving Greta and
often we as family and friends were not sure how to best help her. Precious
are those friends who would call, enquire about Mom on chance meetings, or
find a moment to drop in.
Our family would like to express our appreciation for all staff who cared
for Greta at both Acute Care and Long Term Care was well as Dr. Graff. We
are overwhelmed with the outpouring of kindness and generosity we received
from friends, family and neighbors, and those who have kept us in their
prayers.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 30 from the Olds United Church
with Reverend Shelagh Parsons officiating. Internment followed in the
Westerdale Cemetery. As a memorial tribute to Greta Jackson a tree will be
planted in the Heartland Tree Memorial Park (Olds).

AUGUST KRUGER
October 5, 1912 - November 8, 2003
Our dear Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather was peacefully “Promoted
to Glory” on Saturday, November 8 from the Olds Hospital at the age of 91
years.
He will be greatly missed by his seven remaining children and their spouses:
Stanley, Janice, Marie, Wallace, Ruth, Douglas and Kenneth; his son-in-law
Gilbert Grusie; his older sister Tillie Klukas; 19 grandchildren and 22
great-
grandchildren;, He was predeceased by his loving wife Lily of 54 years
(1987); his eldest daughter Isabel Grusie (2003) and grandson, Graham
Godberson (1988).
August was born in Sarachin, Russia, where his family endured difficult
political times including deportation in a boxcar to Siberia. His
opportunity for formal education was limited to 2 winters. To avoid his
mandatory military service at age 17, the family immigrated to Canada in
1929. This 3 month trip began by horse and wagon. It included endless days
at sea and ended by train at Leduc, Alberta in December, 1929.
August worked hard hauling coal and picking roots and rocks until he had
enough money to buy a train ticket from Leduc to Reed Ranch, Alberta. In
1932, his desire to learn English prompted him to begin work for 2 bachelor
farmers at Mayton, near Reed Ranch. It was while there that he met his
future wife, Lily Boettger. They were married in 1933. In 1936, they
settled on the “Kruger farm”, just west of Torrington, where they raised
their 8 children: Stanley, Isabel, Janice, Marie, Wallace, Ruth, Douglas
and Kenneth.
Not only did he provide for his wife and children, he also provided for his
aging parents who lived in their own house on August’s farm. These years in
the Torrington area were enjoyable ones where community hospitality flowed
and friendships flourished.
In 1971, August and Lily moved from the farm to Torrington, but August
continued farming until he sold the farm in 1998. They enjoyed extensive
travel while living in Torrington. After the passing of his beloved wife,
Lily in 1987, he valiantly carried on until his move from Torrington to
Sunrise Village Lodge in Olds, Alberta, March 2002.
The funeral service for the late August Kruger will be held at the East
Olds Baptist Church on Friday, November 14, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to the Olds Hospital Palliative Care
Unit.
“The family wishes to thank Dr. Wes Jackson, the Olds Hospital and the
Palliative Care Staff, and the Sunrise Lodge Staff for their excellent care
and kindness. Also thanks to Nora Scheurer and many other “special
friends” that have shown warmth, care and love to Dad over the years.”

PATRICIA (PAT) BONAZEW
January 28, 1954 - November 16, 2003
Pat Bonazew, age 49, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Health Centre
in Lethbridge, Alberta on November 16, 2003 after a spirited battle with
cancer.
Pat was born at the Roblin General Hospital in Roblin, MB on January 28,
1954, the youngest child of Alexander and Anne (Labuke) Bonazew. She was
raised and received her education in Roblin, with the exception of one year
where she resided in Toronto, ON. She received her practical nursing degree
from Red River College in Winnipeg and did her practicum in 1972 at Swan
Valley Hospital.
Pat married in 1974 and this union produced Jordan Rooks. In 1977, Pat
re-married and had two more children Myndy and Tim Machan. Marriage was not
Pat’s calling, however. She always said her mission in life was to raise
her children, and that she did. In 1982, Pat and the “kids” (loving pup
Velvet included) moved to Flin Flon, MB where Pat was a nurse at the Flin
Flon General Hospital. Pat went back to school in the mid 1980’s and
received an administrative diploma as her family was growing up and shift
work was not an option for a single mom. This led to a position in the
hospital’s purchasing department.
In 1989 she caught the moving bug and relocated the family to Bowden, AB
where she purchased the local newspaper “The Voice of Bowden”. The paper
was not only a job, but also a lifestyle where Pat flourished. Pat got all
her children through high school in Bowden (which was a real goal for her to
have all of them graduate from the same school). During this time Pat was
an outstanding member of Bowden’s Town Council. After selling the
newspaper, Pat worked at Olds College, which she truly enjoyed. She loved
working with students, as she had always wanted to be a teacher, but that
was not to be.
Once again, related to her mission to raise her children, Pat relocated to
Edmonton in 1999 to help one of them make it through tough times in
post-secondary education. During her stay in Edmonton Pat worked in an
administrative capacity for The Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists
and the Alberta Home and School Association. The move to Edmonton and the
time there was difficult (big city life was not for Pat), but in June 2001
she watched with pride as her daughter accepted her degree from the
University of Alberta and noted to all that would listen that the ends
definitely justified the means.
Pat was diagnosed with lung cancer in March 2003; at the same time her
daughter accepted a job in Lethbridge, AB. Pat thought the move would be
good for her and opted to go along. However, it was decided at this time
she would be the one looked after.
Pat was often heard to say that she looked forward to six new dresses in her
life. She made it to number five. The first three regarded her children’s
high school graduations. The next was for her son Tim’s wedding in August
2002. The fifth was for her son Jordan’s wedding in April 2003. These
unions brought the utmost pride to Pat along with two very special gifts,
grandsons William Rooks and Ethan Machan, whom she cherished. If Pat was
meant to be a mother, she was definitely meant to be a grandmother.
Those to mourn her passing are her loving children, Jordan (Julie) Rooks of
Red Deer, Myndy Machan of Lethbridge, Tim (Stacey) Machan of Medicine Hat
and grandsons William Rooks and Ethan Machan. Also mourning her passing are
her mother, Anne Bonazew of Roblin, grandpuppy Annie, and Pat’s siblings,
Peggy (Norman) Bresky, Harold (Shelby) Bonazew, Irene (Alex) Gourlay, Merle
(Hank) Cormier and their families, which included many special nieces and
nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephew. Pat
also leaves to mourn many wonderful friends from all times in her life, some
of whom include Rosie Pastuck, Jenny Machan, Pat Boydh, Marlene Bobby,
Sophie Anderson, Debbie Bailey, Lorna Reid, Shirley Adams, Mildred Lane, Val
Lucas and Lois Duggan.
Pat was pre-deceased by her father, Alexander Bonazew and nephew, Norman
Bresky Jr.
Memorial services will be held Friday November 21, 2003 at two o’clock at
St. Andrew’s United Church in Bowden, AB with Reverend John Coe officiating.
A luncheon will follow at the Bowden Friendship Center.
A second memorial service will be held Saturday November 29, 2003 at two
o’clock at the Nairn-Chyz Funeral Home in Roblin, MB with Mrs. Peggy Barrows
officiating. A luncheon is to follow at the 50+ Club.
Inurnment at Nova Zora Cemetery in the RM of Shell River, MB at a later
date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in memory of Pat may be made to the
Canadian Cancer Society (Research Dept.) 2nd Flr. 215 - 12th Ave. S.E.
