After the war, he returned to Winnipeg to work at, and eventually manage the family business. Lorne retired from the lumber business in 1962 and after a brief one year stop-over in Phoenix, Arizona, moved with his family to a farm west of Olds, Alberta. During his “retirement” Lorne farmed, worked at Olds Auction Mart, owned and managed Shackleton Agencies and raised Arabian horses. Lorne was an early pioneer in the Arabian horse industry and was actively involved with the Canadian Arab Horse Association, serving for a time as the National Secretary. Lorne had many fond memories of his horseback riding adventures, especially with his friends, Herb, Hank, and Winnipeg pal Gene Gyselinck. Lorne’s family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the Olds Hospital and Care Centre for the care and compassion extended to Lorne until his passing. At Lorne’s request, there will be no Memorial Service and his body has been donated to research at the University of Calgary Medical School. Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Lorne’s life, Friday, April 26th at the Olds farm from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. |
| TUNDER - Myrtle Tunder passed away at the Olds Hospital Extended Care on
April 23, 2002 after battling cancer for the last year. Myrtle was predeceased by her second husband, Ole Tunder in 1985, and her first husband Ernie Smith in 1952. She was also predeceased by her parents Laura and Axel Skage, one brother, three sisters, grandson Sean Oxtoby in 1992 and son-in-law Fraser Lake in 2000. Myrtle will be missed by all who knew her especially by her four daughters, Sharon Lake, Doreen (Ray) Dumont, Wendy Oxtoby (Peter Wanlin), Donna (Dwane) Casebeer; three sons Don (Jean) Smith, Ron (Barb) Smith; and Dennis (Doreen) Smith. Mom considered her legacy to be her family, which consisted of 17 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren who referred to her as “Grandma Great”. She will also be mourned by two sisters, Lil Morgan and Agnes Watson; three brothers John (Elsie) Skage, Art Skage, and Ron (Elsie) Skage; one sister-in-law Gladys Smith of Olds and one brother-in-law Doug Shortt of Victoria, B.C., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Myrtle Marjorie Skage was born in Edmonton on May 5, 1917 and was schooled in north Edmonton. In 1936, she moved to Olds where she met Ernie Smith and they were married the following year. This union produced 6 children over the next 13 years. When Ernie died unexpectedly in 1952, Myrtle was suddenly the sole parent of this large family. How she was able to manage after this event speaks volumes about her character. In 1953, she was blessed when she married Ole Tunder who was a great father to us all. In 1955, Donna was born to Myrtle and Ole. Not content to take it easy raising 7 children, Myrtle began working at the Olds College in the cafeteria until her retirement in 1982. Her “family” grew to include a large number of homesick students to whom she was “Mom”. In her 18 years, she only missed 2 days of work, a feat she was justly proud of. Mom’s health began to deteriorate in June of last year, at which time she became a resident of the Olds Hospital Extended Care, where the staff and residents referred to her as the “dancing lady”. Mom’s stay was made very pleasant by the caring staff in Olds and Red Deer. The family wish to thank each and every care worker for not only their professional care, but also even more for their many kindnesses. A special thanks to Dr. Jackson for his loving care of our Mom. All who knew Myrtle were invited to attend a Celebration of her life on Saturday, April 27, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. in the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #105, 5241 - 46 St., Olds. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Myrtle’s honor may be made directly to the Olds Hospital Long Term Care, 3901 57 Ave., Olds, AB T4H 1T4 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 215 - 12 Ave. SE, Floor 2, Calgary AB, T2G 9Z9. Mountain View Funeral Chapels, Olds entrusted with arrangements. 403-556-3223. |
